Research Associate

Berkeley Lab - California - Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Biological Systems & Engineering Division has an opening for a Research Associate to join the team. In this exciting role, you will be part of the Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts Process Development Unit (ABPDU). You will assist on projects under the supervision of senior personnel that involve fermentation, recovery and purification of biofuels, and bio-based chemicals, proteins, enzymes and materials and are typically funded collaborations with industry partners, National Labs, and academic institutions. The job responsibilities will include assignments documented by SOPs/Batch records for bench and pilot-scale fermentation (2 L to 300 L) and recovery processes (filtration, centrifugation, etc.). What You Will Do: Assist in setting up and taking down bioprocessing equipment, such as bioreactors, filtration skids, etc. Support lab organization and general housekeeping, such as cleaning. Participate in the preparation of batch records to facilitate technology transfer from research collaborators. Execute on semi-routine tasks of Fermentation and Recovery projects, such as sampling, sample processing, and recording data from fermentation instrumentation. What is Required: 1+ years of experience in fermentation/recovery at pilot scale or commercial facilities. Ability to frequently lift 25 pounds and manipulate up to 50 pounds on occasion. Demonstrated ability to interact professionally and productively with other members of the team. Desired Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related areas. Experience with analytical tools used for fermentation/recovery evaluation. Experience in handling, maintaining, and growing microorganisms and recovery/analysis of their products.
