Data Scientist (Energy Efficiency Standards)

Berkeley Lab - California - Berkeley Lab's Energy Analysis and Environmental Impacts Division (EAEI) is looking for a Data Scientist to join their Energy Efficiency Standards (EES) Department! In this role, you will design, develop, and utilize complex methods, processes, and tools for data collection, data management, empirical analysis, and numerical modeling in support of the US Department of Energy (DOE). The EES department supports DOE's Appliance Standards Program by performing the analyses that underlie the development and amendment of energy conservation standards and test procedure rulemakings. This position will develop advanced analytical and modeling tools, data management tools, and provide other high-level technical support including identification, interpretation, and communication of meaningful insights from data and and findings from the analysis. What You Will Do: Create, develop and maintain a broad array of complex numerical models and programming scripts or tools in order to analyze challenging technical and energy policy issues. Demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques. Create, manage, and utilize complex databases with a diverse scope, including technical and economic data. Investigate, create and develop new methods and apply those concepts to energy use and lifecycle cost analysis. Contribute to federal register notices, technical support documents and memos, summarizing methods, data sources, results, conclusions, and/or energy and economic implications. Develop presentations for public meetings. Manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines and uncertain schedules. Offer guidance and direction to early career technical staff. What is Required: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Physics, Statistics, Energy and Resources, or a related discipline and a minimum of 5 years of technical experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated experience in working independently to perform tasks similar to those described in the section above. Advanced proficiency and experience with complex quantitative modeling and analysis, data management, and data visualization. Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and analytical skills to identify issues and recommend creative solutions to complex problems. Proficiency and experience with Python. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including a high attention to detail and the ability to identify and obtain information from diverse sources and contribute to technical reports. Proven ability to work with multiple concurring projects. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within a team. Interest in energy analysis and policy. What We Prefer: Advanced Degree in Engineering, Physics, Statistics, Energy and Resources, or related discipline and a minimum of 3 years technical experience. Familiarity with the US federal regulatory process, especially as it relates to energy efficiency. Advanced proficiency with Python.
