Biologist Project Scientist

Berkeley Lab - California - Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's ( ), has an opening for a Biologist Project Scientist. The position will focus broadly on engineering bacteria for carbon efficient conversion to produce biofuels and bioproducts. In this role, engineering approaches will be applied to multiple hosts to convert intermediates derived from plant biomass (sugars, aromatics) and CO2. What You Will Do: Design engineering strategies to increase the carbon efficiency of bacterial conversion. Combine systems biology and biosystem design approaches to analyze improved bacterial strains. Implement high-throughput approaches to accelerate strain design. Develop strategies and write grants to obtain additional funding for microbial metabolic engineering. Train and direct the work of postdoctoral staff, GSRAs and Student Assistants to achieve project objectives. Draft manuscripts describing experimental work. Present results and discuss plans with funders. What is Required: At least two years of relevant experience focusing on microbial metabolic engineering beyond the highest customary degree in a related field. Experience applying high-throughput approaches to strain engineering. Experience with analytical tools such as HPLC and GC-MS. Experience with scientific journal writing submissions and ability to write above average reviews and articles for submission. Demonstrated competence in engineering non-model bacterial hosts. Good computer skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to write grant proposals and establish independent funding. Additional Desired Qualifications: PhD degree in a related field. Notes: This is a full time, 2 year term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years. M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay. This position may be subject to a background check.
