Scientific Engineering Associate (Energy Technologies Area)

Berkeley Lab - California - Berkeley Lab’s Energy Technologies Area (ETA) is looking for a Scientific Engineering Associate to their team! In this role you will provide technical support to advance knowledge in the areas of power systems, microgrids, energy efficiency, and demand response in buildings working with research teams in Energy Storage and Distributed Resources (ESDR), Building Technologies and Urban Systems (BTUS), and Energy Analysis and Environmental Impacts (EAEI). We are looking for an innovative thinker who can resolve, explore, accomplish, test, and demonstrate advances in (and the connections between) various aspects of energy. What You Will Do: Provide technical assistance to scientists, engineers, and stakeholders to conduct research in: power systems, microgrids, building controls, and analytics, equipment energy efficiency, and demand response. Participate in the diverse tasks related to conceptualizing, designing, building, developing, and testing relevant analytical approaches, and tools. Perform energy modeling using different simulation tools including DER-CAM, Energy+, Modelica, LEAP. Contribute and maintain the existing open-source code base. Provide technical support to the research teams. Contribute to technical reports, presentations, and outreach materials for internal and external audiences Assist with data analysis using modern data science tools. What is Required: A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Architectural) or a closely related field and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in sustainability, energy efficiency, power systems, or environmental technology fields or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of power systems, microgrids, energy efficiency, building HVAC, programming and data analysis including statistical regression and machine learning methods, and demand response. Basic understanding of Machine Learning tools applied to regression and baselining. Knowledge of the Distributed Energy Resources Customer Adoption Model (DER-CAM) software or other microgrid simulation tool. Demonstrated experience using MS Office Suite, Python programming, and data science software packages (e.g., pandas, scikit-learn) with the ability to quickly learn new software applications, procedures, and tasks to gather and analyze qualitative and quantitative data. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work as an independent researcher and as a member of a diverse research team, collaborating toward goals, solving problems, and developing scientific ideas. Strong organizational, time management, and recordkeeping skills with a high attention to detail and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks. What We Prefer: Master’s Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Architectural) or a closely related field. Experience working on research projects, developing and demonstrating topics related to energy efficiency and power systems. Experience with field and lab testing of building technologies (e.g., sensors, controls).
