Berkeley Lab - California - Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s ( ), has an opening for a Plant Biology Research Assistant to work as part of the Feedstocks Division of the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) under direct supervision of Dr. Henrik V. Scheller and in close collaboration with Dr. Jenny Mortimer to assist in maintaining and characterizing plants. The Research Assistant will assist with growing plants in the greenhouse and in growth chambers. Samples will be taken from these plants as well as from plants grown in the field by collaborators. Plant samples will be analyzed through genotyping by PCR, real-time RT-PCR, and determination of plant cell wall sugar composition by high performance anion exchange chromatography. Samples will also be prepared for RNAseq and metabolomics carried out by collaborators. What You Will Do: Support experiments using standard techniques of molecular biology, including extraction and manipulation of DNA and RNA, gel electrophoresis, PCR, and qPCR Support experiments for cell wall analysis, including extraction of cell wall material, chemical and enzymatic hydrolysis, and analysis by HPLC. Maintain plants, including planting and harvesting seeds Prepare media and maintain plant cell cultures Genotype mutant and transgenic plants Maintain well-documented laboratory notebook Assist with day-to-day lab management activities such as ordering, inventory maintenance, and waste management What is Required: Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or similar field preferred, or equivalent work experience Experience with basic molecular biology techniques, including PCR, gel electrophoresis, sterile culturing, and preparation and analysis of DNA Knowledge of underlying principles of biochemistry and molecular biology methods Experience with using equipment such as pH meters, autoclaves, balances, etc. Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills Attention to detail and careful record keeping skillsAbility to follow well-defined protocols to produce consistent reproducible results Interest in and ability to learn and implement new experimental techniques Strong interpersonal and communications skills will the ability to work as part of a larger team Driving license (necessary to drive to greenhouse and field sites) Desired Qualifications: Experience with plants and preparing samples from different tissues Experience with using equipment such as HPLC, LC-MS/MS, or GC-MS Experience with biochemical techniques, e.g., SDS-PAGE, Western blot, enzyme assays and chromatography Experience handling microbes such as Agrobacterium, E. coli and yeast For full consideration, please apply by March 17, 2021.
