Postdoctoral Scholars

Berkeley Lab - California - Berkeley Lab’s ( ) Accelerator Technology & Applied Physics Division ( ) has an immediate and exciting opening for a Postdoctoral Scholars to join the team Berkeley Center for Magnet Technology ( ) has designed and built key components of R&D magnet systems for science and engineering programs, providing vital underpinnings for many aspects of the U.S. Department of Energy ( ) Office of Science mission. We are an interdivisional organization managed jointly by the ATAP and the Engineering Divisions of LBNL. With its unique integration of accelerator physicists and magnet researchers, magnet design engineers, and fabrication teams, the center fosters rapid progress in the development, and reliable delivery, of new magnet technology. In this role, you will perform work within the BCMT as a key member of a team consisting of physicists, engineers, technologists, and students. You will be advancing our understanding of state-of-the-art superconducting accelerator magnets by helping conduct R&D and advanced characterization of superconducting magnet cables. What You Will Do: Conduct original research independently and in collaborations. Perform mechanical characterization measurements and non-destructive data acquisition on superconducting cables fabricated at LBNL. Prepare metallographic samples and acquire cross-section images using optical microscopy. Run image analysis scripts using ImageJ, FIJI, or equivalent. Analyze and correlate results from different characterization techniques. Prepare extracted strand samples, including heat treatment, for residual resistance ratio measurements. Perform room temperature and cryogenic temperature electrical measurements. Assist data analysis and reporting of the electrical measurements. Work closely with task lead to identify critical tasks and produce results on schedule. Identify and develop new techniques, process and/or facility improvements related to cable fabrication and conductor characterization. Present results at collaboration meetings, seminars, workshops and conferences and publish in refereed journals. Mentor students as needed. What is Required: Ph.D. degree in Physics, Materials Science, or related subjects, preferably with substantial experience in applied superconductivity and cryogenics. Demonstrated hands-on experience in preparing metallographic samples for microscopy, operating furnace for heat-treating samples in a retort. Excellent working knowledge of programming in ImageJ / FIJI and VBA in Excel. Demonstrated publication record in a relevant field and proficiency in presenting and publishing scientific results. Meticulousness to the dot. Excellent verbal and written communication and prioritization/organization skills. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to adhere to project schedule. Ability to work effectively in a team environment that includes engineers, scientific staff, technicians, and students. Additional Desired Qualifications: Hands-on experience with optical and scanning electron microscopy. Experience in handling cryogens and in operating cryocooler and vacuum systems. Knowledge of advanced data analysis and visualization methods, including machine learning and neural network-based algorithms is highly desirable. The posting shall remain open until the position is filled. Notes: This is a full-time, 2 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have fewer than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
