Berkeley Lab - California - Berkeley Lab has an exciting new opening for a Civil Engineer. As a member of the , Plant Engineering Department, the Civil Engineer will work on a variety of projects as part of a team responsible for technical activities related to engineering design, planning and implementation needed for the operation, maintenance and timely replacement of laboratory facilities. Under the direction of the Engineering Manager, this position will interact with others from Facilities Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, Project Management, construction subcontractors and equipment vendors to perform job assignments. What You Will Do: Develop project scopes of work, gather field data, and prepare engineering calculations and construction documents including detailed drawings and specifications. Provide engineering reviews of construction projects (Capital and Maintenance Projects) for constructability, operability, maintainability, reliability, and life cycle cost of civil infrastructure and utilities. Review subcontractor A/E design drawings, specifications and reports. Make recommendations and provide guidance to align project deliverables with the Lab's standards and specifications. Ensure civil design complies with applicable codes, regulations, Department of Energy (DOE) Orders and standards adopted by the Laboratory. Assume “ownership” of Berkeley Lab civil infrastructure and ensure safety, maintenance, and strategic planning for the timely renewal of such systems. Troubleshoot and resolve complex infrastructure and utilities issues in support of operations as-needed. Maintain and develop design standards, technical specifications and standard details within the discipline. Make recommendations to change standards and methods to improve processes and results. Perform special assignments such as preparing presentations and studies for senior management. What is Required: Bachelor's degree in a related engineering discipline (e.g. civil engineering) and 5 years of civil design experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience. Subject matter expert experience in applicable codes, regulations and standards adopted by Berkeley Lab (i.e., CBC, ASCE 7, ACI 318, ASCE 41, UC Seismic Safety Policy). Advanced knowledge of design, construction and operation of laboratory facilities, and engineering principles and practices.● A working proficiency with engineering software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D and ArcGIS. Ability to address complex issues of broader scope and impact at institutional level. Expert verbal and written communication, facilitation and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain and advise senior management. Experience leading and developing diverse project or initiative teams. California-licensed professional civil engineer (PE). Desired Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in a related engineering discipline (e.g. civil engineering) and 8 years of civil design experience an or equivalent combination of education and related experience. Notes: This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay. This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate. This position may be subject to a background check.
