Berkeley Lab - California - The Center for Computational Sciences and Engineering (CCSE) develops and applies advanced computational methodologies to solve large-scale scientific and engineering problems arising in Department of Energy (DOE) mission areas involving energy, environment, and industrial technology. One primary focus of CCSE researchers is on designing algorithms for multiscale, multiphysics problems described by nonlinear systems of partial differential equations, and developing implementations of algorithms that target current and next-generation massively parallel computational architectures. CCSE researchers work collaboratively with application scientists to develop state-of-the-art solution methodologies in these fields. This position is a research and software development position focusing on the continued development and application of MFIX-Exa, a new code for modeling multiphase flow using CFD-DEM with mesh refinement, based on the AMReX software framework. This position will be focused on two areas; the first is code and algorithm development along with performance testing and optimization. The second part of the position involves extension of the modeling capabilities of the MFIX-Exa code to explore new application areas. The software efforts are collaborative with the AMReX team so that MFIX-Exa makes full use of the AMReX capabilities and also contributes back to the core functionality. The new application areas should build on CCSE's existing strengths. What You Will Do: Participate in the continued development, testing and performance improvement of MFIX-Exa on current and next generation architectures. Design and implement algorithmic and coding alternatives as needed to ensure high performance on hybrid CPU/GPU systems. Develop and assess optimization strategies that mitigate potential computational and communication bottlenecks in MFIX-Exa. Participate in exploring new application areas for the MFIX-Exa current and future capabilities. Work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment including mathematicians, computer/computational scientists, and domain scientists. What is Required: Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or the Physical Sciences/Engineering within the last 3 years, with a strong research background in applied mathematics, computational methods, and scientific computing. Demonstrated research experience in the modeling of fluids and/or of fluid-particle systems. Demonstrated C++ programming experience. Experience with hybrid parallelism. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work productively independently and collaboratively as part of a diverse team. Desired Qualifications: Experience with CFD-DEM a plus. Experience with CUDA and/or other techniques for general purpose programming on GPUs. Experience with visualization and analysis tools for fluid and/or particle flows. Experience with python . Experience with version control systems such as git. Strong interpersonal, collaborative communication skills are a plus. Notes: This is a full-time 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree. This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes. Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment. Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
