Research Assistant

Berkeley Lab - California - Berkeley Lab’s Climate & Ecosystems Division has an opening for a Research Assistant. What You Will Do: Work on microbial assignments mainly focusing on microbial enrichment, isolation, 16S based phylogenetic identification and phenotypic characterization of environmental microbes Perform repetitive procedures such as media preparation, chemical stocks preparation, extracting gDNA. Maintain inventory of microbial cultures and freezer stocks. Maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook of all work performed. Maintain standards of cleanliness of the work area and a safe and productive work area for research. Maintain inventory, organize and order lab supplies. What is Required: B.S. in microbiology, or related fields and/or equivalent experience within the past 12 months. Working knowledge of using analytical instruments like IC, Spectrophotometer, Microscope, PCR machines. Working knowledge and skills related to standard chemistry and biology laboratory techniques. Working experience in microbiology or molecular biology laboratories. Ability to collect and reduce data and to maintain accurate and detail lab books. Skill with computers including basic spreadsheet and sequence aligning software to enter data and record keeping. Excellent communication skills. Notes: This is a temporary, 08-month, limited appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. Cannot exceed 900 hours within a rolling 12-month period. Part-time, up to 30 hours per week, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime. This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes. Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement. This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position.
