Research Assistant

Berkeley Lab - California - Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's ( ) Fusion Science & Ion Beam Technology Program at Accelerator Tech-Applied Physics ( ) Division has an opening for a Research Assistant to join the team. In this exciting role, you will work on projects in accelerator science and applications of particle beams in fusion energy sciences and materials, including materials for quantum information science. Under close supervision of scientific staff, you will carry out simulations, participate in experimental setup and operation, control and data acquisition, data analysis, and simulation What You Will Do: Become familiar with the relevant concepts and procedures through reading/searching the literature, discussions with scientists, seminars, and comparisons with a variety of specifications. Participate in experiment setup and operation, data taking, data analysis, and running simulations to verify and better understand the experiments. Collaborate on the experiments, working effectively and closely with a team of scientists, engineers, postdocs and students. Ability to understand instructions regarding scientific procedures and then carry out those instructions with close supervision. Maintain lab notebook and detailed experiment logs. Document, communicate results and provide status reports to the supervisor. Participate in regular group meetings and discussions. Adhere to Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) policies and attend training classes as required. Follow LBL's safety regulations and ensure a safe working environment. What Is Required: Bachelor's degree in Physics, Engineering or related field or equivalent experience. Basic theoretical knowledge and practical experience with (some) of solid state physics, detectors, electron beam acceleration, and low temperature experiment. Proficiency with basic data acquisition and analysis coding using scientific programming languages (Matlab, Python, etc…). Detail-oriented with good interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. The posting shall remain open until the position is filled. Notes: This is a full time, 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. Full-time, M-F, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay. This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes. Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement. This position may be subject to a background check.
