Berkeley Lab - California - Berkeley Lab's Energy Analysis and Environment Impacts (EAEI) Division has an opening for a Project Scientist to join their Sustainable Energy and Environmental Systems Department (SEES)! In this role, you will serve a key role in projects related to modeling Li-ion battery costs and environmental impacts and conducting analysis related to bioenergy and organic waste. You will contribute through the development of datasets and life-cycle assessment models. We are looking for experience in life-cycle assessment, greenhouse gas emissions accounting, and energy storage modeling. What You Will Do: Develop conceptual process designs based on R&D and experimental results from the bench/pilot scale experiments. Carry out detailed economic analysis and life-cycle greenhouse gas assessment, identify key cost and emissions drivers and help scientists prioritizing their research efforts. Collect and analyze data and prepare results for publication in scientific journals and presentations at conferences. Participate in technical and economic feasibility discussions related to new processes. Proactively engage in discussions with other research groups to identify their TEA and LCA needs. Facilitate collaborations with academic, government, and industrial entities. Participate in educational and outreach activities. What is Required: Advanced Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline and a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience conducting life-cycle assessments, particularly for wastewater treatment systems and energy storage systems or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated competency in carrying out systems level analysis of complex industrial processes. Demonstrated publication record. Knowledge of economic evaluation methods such as cash flow analysis. Proven capabilities in innovative and applied research in a science-driven research environment. Flexible, approachable and able to prioritize and manage multiple cross-functional projects. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work independently and interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues in a dynamic environment. What We Prefer: Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline. Experience and/or interest in teaching. Experience in preparing and/or contributing to research proposals. A broad understanding of process operations from the chemical process industry and other related industries (such as power generation and transportation). Knowledge of battery life-cycle assessment. Ability to model transportation systems. Knowledge of supply chain design and operations, optimization methods. Learn About Us: (LBNL) addresses the world's most urgent scientific challenges by advancing sustainable energy, protecting human health, creating new materials, and revealing the origin and fate of the universe. Founded in 1931, Berkeley Lab's scientific expertise has been recognized with 13 Nobel prizes. The University of California manages Berkeley Lab for the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. The focuses on three broad areas: Energy Markets, Policy, and Infrastructure; Energy and Environmental Systems Analysis; and Appliance and Equipment Standards. We develop analytical and experimental methods and tools to assess the technical, economic, and market potential of energy technologies, as well as the associated social, economic, health, and environmental impacts. The Sustainable Energy and Environmental Systems Department ( ) analyzes potential environmental and economic benefits, scalability issues, barriers, and market and policy opportunities for emerging energy, environmental, and climate technology solutions. Our analyses draw on a diverse set of tools and methods - including life-cycle assessment, complex systems modeling, atmospheric and human health impacts modeling, geographical information systems, and scenario analysis -- to identify robust research and development (R&D) and policy pathways to maximize the energy, climate, economic, ecological, human-health, and societal benefits of advanced technologies.
