Project Scientist (Sustainable Energy and Environmental Systems)

Berkeley Lab - California - Berkeley Lab's Energy Analysis and Environment Impacts (EAEI) Division has an opening for a Project Scientist to join their Sustainable Energy and Environmental Systems Department (SEES)! In this role, you will serve a key role in projects related to modeling Li-ion battery costs and environmental impacts and conducting analysis related to bioenergy and organic waste. You will contribute through the development of datasets and life-cycle assessment models. We are looking for experience in life-cycle assessment, greenhouse gas emissions accounting, and energy storage modeling. What You Will Do: Develop conceptual process designs based on R&D and experimental results from the bench/pilot scale experiments. Carry out detailed economic analysis and life-cycle greenhouse gas assessment, identify key cost and emissions drivers and help scientists prioritizing their research efforts. Collect and analyze data and prepare results for publication in scientific journals and presentations at conferences. Participate in technical and economic feasibility discussions related to new processes. Proactively engage in discussions with other research groups to identify their TEA and LCA needs. Facilitate collaborations with academic, government, and industrial entities. Participate in educational and outreach activities. What is Required: Advanced Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline and a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience conducting life-cycle assessments, particularly for wastewater treatment systems and energy storage systems or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated competency in carrying out systems level analysis of complex industrial processes. Demonstrated publication record. Knowledge of economic evaluation methods such as cash flow analysis. Proven capabilities in innovative and applied research in a science-driven research environment. Flexible, approachable and able to prioritize and manage multiple cross-functional projects. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work independently and interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues in a dynamic environment. What We Prefer: Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline. Experience and/or interest in teaching. Experience in preparing and/or contributing to research proposals. A broad understanding of process operations from the chemical process industry and other related industries (such as power generation and transportation). Knowledge of battery life-cycle assessment. Ability to model transportation systems. Knowledge of supply chain design and operations, optimization methods.
