Berkeley Lab - California - Berkeley Lab's Energy Analysis and Environment Impacts (EAEI) Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join their Indoor Environment (IE) Group within their Sustainable Energy Systems Department and the Whole Building Systems (WBS) Group within the Building Technologies and Urban Systems (BTUS) Division. In this role, you will take a leading technical role in a project to review and document the state of knowledge and available data related to ventilation air quality in the U.S. commercial building sector. The goal of the study is to identify opportunities for high impact research, development and demonstration activities to improve indoor air quality, health and productivity conditions while simultaneously reducing energy use and peak power demand, and improving resilience and grid interactivity of US commercial buildings. What You Will Do: Design and conduct research to improve understanding of indoor air and environmental quality, health and productivity in the built environment, with a focus on energy efficient and resilient buildings. Identify, critically review, and synthesize information from published reports and available data to inform a review of what is known about the performance of commercial building ventilation and IEQ. Conduct outreach, obtain and review input from researchers and building industry professionals with knowledge of ventilation equipment and practices and IEQ performance of existing buildings. Design databases to compile existing data on ventilation and IEQ in commercial buildings and as feasible obtain available data to populate the databases. Contribute to field data collection, sample analysis and data processing to advance LBNL studies of IEQ in residential and commercial buildings. Communicate research results through technical reports, journal manuscripts, web pages, etc. and oral presentations at technical meetings. What is Required: Recent Ph.D. in relevant science or engineering field. In-depth knowledge of indoor environmental quality (IEQ), exposure and risk assessment, statistical analysis methods for environmental data, and public health science and policy. Good understanding of building science principles and technologies that impact IEQ and energy use in commercial buildings. General knowledge of physical, chemical and biological processes that impacts air pollutant transport and fate in indoor environments. Proficiency in the use of computing statistical analysis and visualization software (e.g. python, R), and database design and management (e.g. postgreSQL). Demonstrated written communication skills with the ability to write high-quality technical publications. Excellent oral and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to independently execute tasks that require critical thinking. What We Prefer: General knowledge of simulation tools like EnergyPlus and CONTAM. General knowledge of building codes and standards, practices and technologies. Experience with research involving human subjects. Experience with field measurements of IEQ, IAQ, and health metrics. Experience with survey design and data analysis. For full consideration, please apply by November 27, 2020 with the following application materials: Cover Letter - Describe your interest in this position and the relevance of your background. Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume. Notes: This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree and is predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes. This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment. This position will be remote initially but limited to individuals residing in the United States tentatively until early 2021 due to COVID-19. Once the Bay Area shelter-in-place restrictions are lifted, work may be performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Learn About Us: (LBNL) addresses the world's most urgent scientific challenges by advancing sustainable energy, protecting human health, creating new materials, and revealing the origin and fate of the universe. Founded in 1931, Berkeley Lab's scientific expertise has been recognized with 13 Nobel prizes. The University of California manages Berkeley Lab for the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. The focuses on three broad areas: Energy Markets, Policy, and Infrastructure; Energy and Environmental Systems Analysis; and Appliance and Equipment Standards. We develop analytical and experimental methods and tools to assess the technical, economic, and market potential of energy technologies, as well as the associated social, economic, health, and environmental impacts. The Group uses a multidisciplinary approach to study the indoor environment effects on occupant outcome and building energy use. Researchers in our Group have backgrounds in engineering, sciences, economics, statistics and public health. We aim to improve the understanding of pollutants that impact the built environment, and energy-efficient strategies to better indoor air quality. Berkeley Lab's Postdoc Program is committed to providing Postdoctoral Researchers and Visiting scholars with a positive and impactful experience to jump-start their career through premium research and career development, networking opportunities, mentoring programs, and strong community.
