Project Scientist

Berkeley Lab - California - Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's ( ) Division has an opening for a Project Scientist to join the team. In this exciting role, you will develop research directions in an integrated project in the areas of infrared spectroscopy and infrared imaging of neuronal systems. You will lead in the planning and completion of research in infrared imaging and analysis. This includes image acquisition and spectral analysis and computational analysis. A second related part of the project involves sample preparation from living mouse primary cells the brain, fluorescence imaging and cell biology of brain cells. What You Will Do: Independent development of a research project with the appropriate command of methodology. Maintain an organized and well-documented laboratory notebook. Command and familiarity with imaging and computation skills such as Python. Command and familiarity of proteins biochemistry and cell biology (if involved in sample preparation). Prepare manuscripts and participate in writing grant applications and preparation of meeting presentations. Review and mentor the work of support staff related to the research. This includes directing the work of Postdoctoral Fellows, Research Associates, technical support staff, and students relevant to the project. Responsible and accountable for the proper conduct of the project or activity. Publish in peer-reviewed journals. Present research at seminars and conferences. Assist the PI in developing grant proposals. What is Required: 2-5 years of relevant experience beyond the highest degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biophysics, or a related field. Deep understanding of infrared spectroscopy and working knowledge or strong interest in imaging and hyperspectral analysis, machine learning, statistics, or hardware-software design. Areas of expertise must include one or more of the following: infrared spectroscopy, preferably infrared micro spectrometry, computational imaging, Python programming, bioinformatics, statistics, and hardware/software engineering, and machine learning. Demonstrated technical proficiency in the field of biochemistry and molecular biology with sound knowledge of cell biology or light imaging. For example, may have demonstrated knowledge of or experience in cell biology imaging or protein biochemistry and purification. Strong analytical and organizational skills. Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Ability to work independently as well as part of a diverse team. Ability to document and summarize research results for presentation and publications with a proven record of publications in peer-reviewed journals. Desired Qualifications: Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biophysics, or a related field. Familiarity with brain cell and tissue sample preparation. Neuroscience background and neuronal tissue/cell analysis. Background in Imaging. Notes: This is a full time, 1 year 6 month, term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years.
