Berkeley Lab - California - 's (LBNL) has an immediate and exciting opening for a Mechanical Engineer - Technical Procurement Management to join the team. This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic “go-to” individual who can apply manufacturing industry expertise plus excellent interpersonal skills to be the resource for internal project managers/engineers and external vendors. This role calls for proactive, independent analysis of technical items for manufacturing purchases, close coordination with procurement staff, managing status of and planning various procurements. This position is best fit for a mechanical/manufacturing engineer who is savvy at building and maintaining strategic business relationships while focusing on the macro perspective regarding technical needs and logistics details of projects.. This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs; and skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate. What You Will Do: Coordinate the fabrication of scientific experimental equipment for government-sponsored national research programs and facilities. Be the primary resource and coordinator for specific engineering projects regarding procurement, shipping/receiving, onsite manufacturing, and external subcontractors. Consult with engineering staff to establish performance criteria and specifications for manufacturing and testing. Work with project managers to help develop project scope and manage related logistics (time/cost estimates, assembly/installation timelines). Provide technical advice to procurement representative. (technical aspects of drawings, understanding of technical issues; advise on vendor qualifications, technical details of contract proposal verbiage) Explore and validate cost effective and timely solutions for complex and often technically challenging projects. Analyze technical data, designs, preliminary specifications, manufacturing limitations, supplier facilities, and availability of parts and equipment. Investigate potential vendors and make recommendations; be aware of and communicate vendor discrepancies and parts/equipment issues. Prepare technical or progress reports with minimal supervision. Write specifications for technically complex or challenging procurements; including the gathering and organization of technical details and requirements. Facilitate material inspection, substitution, standardization, rework, salvage, utilization, and economical procurement of parts and equipment. May infrequently travel to tradeshows, as appropriate. What is Required: B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or similar technical degree plus at least 3 years of experience in liaison/coordinator role with procurement staff, or overall equivalent experience Excellent and effective communication/interpersonal skills, meeting facilitation, organization and detail orientation with the ability to handle multiple competing priorities and projects Knowledge of the technical aspects and considerations of mechanical/manufacturing related items to determine appropriate procurements for various projects Experience reading, understanding, and interpreting assembly, detail, and weldment drawings Technical knowledge of manufacturing and assembly practices and processes. A typical project may include the following types of equipment: particle accelerators, plasmas, and/or charged particle systems; optics: charged particle and/or x-ray; X-ray (synchrotron/FEL) beamline design; magnetic systems: normal conducting, superconducting, and/or permanent magnet; cryogenic systems; vacuum systems. Experience in a R&D environment is preferred. The posting shall remain open until the position is filled. Notes: This is a full-time 2-year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to a career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
