Inch Cyclotron Electronics Maintenance Technician

Berkeley Lab - California - (LBNL) has an opening for an 88-Inch Cyclotron Electronics Maintenance Technician to join the team. In this exciting role, you will independently perform advanced technical support in the field of electronics test, maintenance, and development. You will design, develop, test, evaluate, debug, and maintain complex electronics, electro-mechanical, or computer equipment and systems where the application of advanced sophisticated technological skills, scientific principles, and mathematics are required. What You Will Do: Diagnose and correct equipment and system malfunctions that fail to respond to conventional corrective measures by independently applying a high degree of technical creativity, innovation, expertise, and judgment. Develop or evaluate test procedures, analyze circuit or system performance requirements, and develop effective diagnostics by applying advanced technological skills, scientific principles, and mathematical calculations. Collaborate with engineering staff in the design, modification, and development of commercial and experimental circuitry, systems or prototype models. Advise and assist professional staff and contribute to the design of technical applications. Utilize extensive knowledge of 88-Inch Cyclotron high voltage and high current power supplies. Utilize extensive knowledge of 88-Inch Cyclotron high power RF systems. Generate rough sketches, engineering drawings, and develop special procedures for control and operation of research experiments and tests. Write or interpret specifications used in designing, maintaining, and calibrating electronic or computer components, equipment, or systems. Plan and organize the support effort and material needed to complete a specific project or task. Perform all duties in compliance with applicable Environment, Health and Safety rules and regulations as described in LBL Pub-3000 and other related documents. Proactively promote and participate in matters relating to safety and environmentally sensitive work practices. Participate in various formal ES&H training activities as required by specific duties and responsibilities. Support Lab-wide and Engineering Division Diversity-in-the-Workplace goals. Be sensitive to the needs of all employees and contribute to the establishment and maintenance of a nurturing work environment. Additional Responsibilities as needed: Provide technical guidance and on-the-job training to lower level or less experienced staff on matters relating to complex circuit analysis, troubleshooting, repair, and calibration techniques and procedures. Lead small groups focused on specific tasks or projects. What Is Required: Advanced technical understanding of electronics, electro-mechanical, or computer theory, scientific principles, and mathematics. 4 years of work experience in performing advanced troubleshooting, repair, and calibration of complex electronics or computer equipment. Ability to successfully accomplish assignments by independently applying a high degree of technical creativity, innovation, expertise, and judgment. Knowledge of and ability to use complex test equipment, diagnostic routines and procedures, and appropriate hand, and power tools of the trade. Ability to write or interpret complex test, assembly, calibration, maintenance or operating procedures. General knowledge of engineering design and test-documentation procedures and techniques. Color vision sufficient to discern wiring and component color codes, and safety-related colored signs, lamps, and warning devices. Ability to climb stairs and ladders, work from heights and confined spaces, and lift 23 kg (50 lbs.) Additional Desired Qualifications: AA Degree in Electronics Engineering Technology, Computer Science, or Computer Technology or the equivalent in the formal military or industrial training. Computer-Aided electronics drafting and design-documentation skills. General personal computer application skills with spreadsheets, databases, word processors, and graphics. Planning, teaching, organizing, and writing skills. Knowledge and understanding of 88-Inch Cyclotron Radiation Protective Interlock Systems. Ability to execute detailed procedures and repairs to ensure personnel is provided adequate protection against radiation hazards. The posting shall remain open until the position is filled. Notes: This is a full-time, career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay. This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes. Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement. This position may be subject to a background check.
