Computational Research Scientist (Building Technology & Urban Systems)

Berkeley Lab - California - Berkeley Lab’s Building Technology and Urban Systems (BTUS) Division is looking for a Computational Research Scientist to conduct research, implement and deploy Modelica- and FMI-based new generation computing tools for building and district energy system design and operation. In this role, you will participate in projects such BOPTEST, MPCPy, Spawn of EnergyPlus, the Modelica Buildings and IBPSA libraries and OpenBuildingControl, as well as assist with leading national and international collaborations related to these projects. What You Will Do: Use fundamental principles, theories, and concepts to conduct research, develop and deploy a new generation computing tools for building and district energy system design and Model Predictive Control based on the Modelica and FMI standards. Conduct research, implementation and distribution of computing tools for building and district energy systems, including their controls, based on Modelica, FMI and mathematical programming packages, for design and real-time operation. Link domain-specific simulation programs to each other to support rapid prototyping, integrated whole-system level analysis and model-use during operations. Contribute to national and international collaborations to advance Model Predictive Control for building and district energy systems. Contribute to or co-author research results in leading journals, present findings at conferences and work with industry on testing and deploying the research. Assist with leading research projects, contribute to writing proposals, and securing funding. What We Are Looking For: At a minimum, a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Controls, Computer Science, Architectural Engineering; or equivalent combination of education and minimum 5 years of relevant research experience beyond the highest customary degree. Demonstrated expertise in system simulation, building sciences and controls, including Model Predictive Control, through journal and conference publications. A minimum of 2 years of experience developing mathematical models for building energy simulation. Demonstrated strong skills in developing models in languages and simulators for systems of differential algebraic equations (such as Modelica or Simulink) in the domain of building energy and control systems. Strong knowledge of building science, numerical methods for simulation, and nonlinear optimization. Strong knowledge of programming languages, such as Modelica, C/C++, Python, Java, and JavaScript. Good knowledge of HVAC systems and building controls. Excellent verbal and written communication skills including demonstrated presentational skills including the ability to apply and interpret advanced research principals, theories, and concepts. Demonstrated track record of publications in peer-reviewed literature. Ability to conduct independent research while working on multiple tasks and projects. What We Prefer: Advanced Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Controls, Computer Science, Architectural Engineering. Demonstrated research experience in system simulation, building sciences and controls. Experience in writing proposals.
