We are looking for an Associate Mechanical Engineer - R&D Lighting to join our Hawthorne team in Vancouver, WA. The chosen candidate will help lead the technical advancement of the Hawthorne lighting innovation platform and partner with the lighting Category Manager to design and execute a product innovation pipeline that supports the business strategic goals. The lighting categories of Hawthorne include commercial and retail HPS, CMH, and LED fixtures for a variety of growing facilities. The role will also support the development of controllers for lighting and other environmental uses primarily for Hydroponic indoor gardening. The business supported by the role provides products for hydroponic indoor gardening as well as greenhouse horticulture markets in North America and globally. The chosen candidate will both work with vendors and third-party contractors as well as provide individual contributions to execute product development. The ideal candidate will be self-driven with an eagerness to learn in a fast-evolving industry. . What you'll do in this role: Study plans for upcoming generation of Lighting and Controller models, and develop mechanical and creative design strategies for improving upon current models Perform competitive analysis and research competitor products quarterly and collaborate with category and sales team to generate ideas for making best-in-class products Support senior mechanical engineer and own product mechanical design internally or through OEM/ ODM, to support the release of new luminaire designs that meet the highest standard for performance, quality, cost, and safety from preliminary concept through implementation into manufacturing Attend weekly internal team meetings and OEM/ODM meetings to provide progress reports, obtain updates on OEM/ODM's progress, strategize on steps for following week and acquire information about projected emerging product lines Work with procurement and PLM team on accurately creating bills of materials, drawings, and instructions for vendors and manufacturing. Maintain all product documentation in SAP. Work in close collaboration with manufacturing, compliance and quality for the design of products for optimal quality and manufacturability Partner closely with Category Managers and Technical Service team to ensure they are armed with ample technical knowledge for market introduction of new products Travel up to 10% of time, ability to travel internationally to Europe and Asia What you'll need to be successful: A. Education: Bachelor's degree or greater in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Design B. Experience: CAD experience (Solidworks preferred) FEA knowledge in thermal and fluid dynamics C. Knowledge: Advanced knowledge on mechanical engineering principles D. Skills and Abilities: Creative problem solver Artistic and up to date with the latest trends in consumer tech product design Ability to interact with and contribute to cross-functional teams Ability to handle multiple projects or tasks simultaneously Drive to deliver products on time with attention to quality Ability to communicate and develop relationships with external vendors Constant curiosity and drive to learn about new technologies and processes Preferred Requirements A.
