Berkeley Lab - California - (LBNL) Division has an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Research Scientist (Career-Track) in the . In this exciting role, you will integrate modern analyses in environmental chemistry, microbial ecology, biogeochemistry to develop an improved understanding of microbial transformations of anthropogenic and naturally occurring inputs of carbon, nitrogen forms in a wide range of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. This position requires expertise chemistry, microbial ecology, environmental processes, carbon biogeochemistry and nutrient cycling. What You Will Do: Responsible for independently designing and managing large-scale studies of microbial function and metabolic interactions with naturally occurring, and anthropogenically produced organic carbon and nitrogen in soils, sediment, groundwater. Work with complex microbial communities together with other domain scientists (including plant biologists, soil biologists, geochemists, biochemists). Develop a program of independent research and attract extramural funds. Effectively communicate and collaborate with members of a large, multi-disciplinary research team. Use cutting-edge applications in microbial ecology by forming strategic collaborations with other National Lab researchers and/or University PIs. Communicate scientific findings through the development of scientific manuscripts, and publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals. Present findings in workgroup meetings, seminars and conferences, and workshops. What Is Required: Ph.D. degree in any environmental sciences, ecology, environmental microbiology or related field (or equivalent work experience) plus a minimum of 3-5 years Postdoctoral experience. Knowledge of conventional and novel chemistry of environmental systems. Demonstrated experience in the development and application of complex/advanced methods for the investigation of the interaction between components of biogeochemical processes. Demonstrated ability to acquire, analyze and interpret large datasets, for subsequent integration into numerical models and/or model testing. Must have a background in microbiology, chemical biology or a related discipline. Significant experience in the analysis of chemical species in environments with a proven track record in this area reflected in recent publications. A good understanding of microbes, chemistry, and the environment is critical, as is a vision of how environmental chemistry can be combined with microbiology to dissect key biochemical mechanisms contributing to ecosystem resilience. Capable of developing a program of independent research and attract extramural funds. Enhance LBNL's reputation in the use of cutting-edge applications in microbial ecology by forming strategic collaborations with other National Lab researchers and/or University PIs. Demonstrated ability to communicate scientific findings through the development of scientific manuscripts, and publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals. Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with members of a large, multi-disciplinary research team. Requested Application Materials: Curriculum Vitae and publication list. Statement of research and scientific vision. Names and contact information for at least three references (at least two external to the Lab and UCBerkeley). The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on July 31, 2020. Notes: This is a full time, 1 year, career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
