Environmental Health & Safety Engineer

Berkeley Lab - California - Berkeley Lab's has an opening for a Safety Engineer to join the Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts Process Demonstration Unit (ABPDU). This position will support the safety efforts in several projects related to integrated production and recovery of advanced biofuels, including biomass pretreatment, fermentation, and recovery purification unit operations. What You Will Do: Provide leadership in developing, implementing, and managing EH&S policies, programs, and practices at ABPDU. Coordinate with Emery Station East (ESE) safety coordinator, PI, clients, and institutional biosafety committee (IBC) to evaluate new and existing microbes, processes, and products for safety. Document findings in the work, planning and control activity. Maintain employee and affiliate training compliance through the work, planning and control activities. Environmental sampling and sample submission of facilities for IBC compliance. Prepare and coordinate ABPDU monthly safety workshop and participate in the ESE safety committee meeting. Plan and implement programs to train Research Associates (RAs), Sr. RAs, and other employees to meet standards and to enhance the lab's safety culture. Assist with a new employee safety orientation program and employee safety training. Assist ESE safety coordinator with the investigation of all incidents and injuries from the initial report to closure. Work with PI on getting the biosafety risk assessment and material transfer agreement forms from newly contracted collaborators. Inspect organization facilities (safety audits) daily to detect existing or potential incidents and health hazards, determine corrective or preventive measures where indicated and follow up to ensure measures have been implemented. Work in collaboration with all the technical groups in the ABPDU and our project partners. Additional Responsibilities as needed: Assist with finalizing the sub-contractor job hazard analysis (sJHA) and work with the facilities team to make sure all hazards are reviewed and documented. Assist the facilities team with ESE & lab wide building emergency plan. Coordinate with the Facilities team on the transportation of hazardous chemicals and products back to the client site. Take on mentoring duties as assigned. What is Required: Knowledge equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related areas with relevant programs and extensive related professional technical experience preferred. Basic knowledge of chemical and biochemical unit operations for biofuel/biochemical/protein production, their recovery, and characterization. Participation in EH&S related activities Additional Desired Qualifications: 2-5 years' experience working in a lab and pilot-scale facility. Ability to lead fermentation teams in reviewing safety issues and developing solutions in a timely manner. The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.
