Research Associate

Berkeley Lab - California - Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s ( ), has an opening for a Research Associate (RA) to join the Mammalian Functional Genomics Laboratory. The Research Associate will carry out various duties related to support of the transgenic mouse group and support of the molecular biology lab as part of several projects aimed at understanding how mammalian gene expression is regulated. The successful candidate will work with live mice, mouse tissue samples, and perform animal microdissection. The Research Associate will be expected to assist with analyzing experimental results, generate reports, and present findings at group meetings. What You Will Do: Provide support to the transgenic mouse facility, including but not limited to general animal husbandry, intraperitoneal injections, egg collection, mouse microdissection, maintenance of mouse lines including tagging, tissue biopsy and genotyping of transgenic lines, euthanasia. Provide general semi-routine support to molecular biology lab including but not limited to dishwashing, autoclaving of glassware, routine maintenance of lab equipment, buffer preparation, supply inventory. Perform various molecular biology techniques such as PCR, vector ligation, bacterial transformation, small- and large-scale plasmid preps, restriction enzyme digest, gel electrophoresis. Perform minimal analysis with experimental results, generate reports, present findings. Maintain careful records of all experiments performed. Meet regularly with supervisor and other team members to discuss project progress and provide recommendations to improve the experimental pipeline. What is Required: Bachelor’s degree in Biology or related discipline preferred and up to a few years of relevant experience. Willingness to work with research mice. Experience with molecular biology techniques: PCR, bacterial transformation, large, small and scale DNA purification, restriction digest, gel electrophoresis. Ability to learn new laboratory protocols and technologies. Detail-oriented with strong organizational, writing and record-keeping skills. Good analytical skills to effectively evaluate data and make recommendations. Excellent and effective interpersonal communication and presentation skills; ability to interact collaboratively with staff at all levels of the organization. Must demonstrate efficient time management skills and the ability to multitask. Competent in the use of computers and related software programs (i.e., Google Drive and Workspace applications, Microsoft Office, online laboratory notebooks). Willingness to work in a lab environment with changing priorities and technologies. Desired Qualifications: Experience with rodent handling and/or laboratory rodent animal husbandry. Notes: This is a full time 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
