Research Integrity & Policy Manager

Berkeley Lab - California - Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is seeking a Research Integrity and Policy Manager to uphold one of Berkeley Lab’s key stewardship principles: to conduct research of the highest quality, with honesty, accuracy, efficiency, and objectivity. As a member of the Research Compliance Office, the Research Integrity and Policy Manager will fulfill an important role to uphold these principles at Berkeley Lab. This position will investigate research ethics concerns and provide advice to the Lab’s research community on research integrity and ethical practices in research. Working closely with the Berkeley Lab leadership team and research community, this position will develop, implement and update relevant policies and guidelines to support the integrity and quality of research. This position will establish strong working relationships with the Human Resources department, Office of Laboratory Counsel, Human and Animal Research Committees, University of California Office of Ethics, Compliance and Audit Services, the Department of Energy (DOE) Bay Area Site Office among others. As such, the ideal candidate will champion a collaborative approach in leading and guiding relevant policy formulation and compliance efforts, while promoting ethical behavior and research integrity across the Laboratory to enable Berkeley Lab to achieve its mission. What You Will Do: Build a strong understanding of the research process and provide advice to researchers on all aspects of research integrity and research ethics. Independently investigate concerns brought forward in accordance with Berkeley Lab’s research misconduct policy and applicable requirements by research funders. Ensure that deficiencies are corrected. Conduct interviews and write investigative summaries/reports in accordance with all relevant workflows and standards. Provide written and oral briefings and recommendations to the Research Integrity Officer and executive/senior management and oversight groups. Keep consistent, accurate and complete case management records in accordance with records retention schedules. Maintain effective, collaborative working relationships with other Laboratory investigative organizations and all relevant offices at Berkeley Lab, University of California and DOE. In partnership with the Research Integrity Officer, Laboratory leadership and other relevant parties, develop, implement, administer and certify policies, procedures, and practices that ensure and support research integrity at Berkeley Lab. Ensure alignment with legal ethical standards of the Lab. Champion research integrity and ethics standards with Berkeley Lab researchers. Develop and deliver employee communication, outreach and training programs to strengthen awareness and knowledge around all aspects of research integrity, ethics in research and responsible research practices. Represent the Research Compliance Office at internal and external meetings and conferences. Emphasize and embody ethical conduct, impartiality, teamwork, continuous improvement, and best practices in your work. What is Required: Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience in a related field (e.g., science, law, business administration, ethics and compliance, fraud investigation, internal audit, workplace investigations, paralegal); or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated record of impeccable integrity, workplace ethics, professional judgment and discretion. Expertise in scientific workflows, processes and policies. Demonstrated experience writing policy, procedural or reporting documents. Ability to present information to large groups in an understandable and convincing manner. Strong knowledge of topics and themes related to research integrity and ethics. Ability to effectively perform research integrity assessments and investigations with impartiality and under strict confidentiality. Ability to analyze, understand, interpret, and evaluate alternatives to detailed and complex government regulations, orders and directives as they relate to an organization’s research and stewardship objectives. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the proven ability to influence and work diplomatically with colleagues, external stakeholders and senior staff. Demonstrated ability to work independently on multiple assignments, establish priorities with limited direction, use judgment to determine appropriate action and to select methods and techniques to obtain solutions and make decisions within scope of work. Desired Qualifications: An advanced degree and minimum of 8 years of related experience. Experience performing research integrity assessments and investigations. Research program experience at a national laboratory, an academic institution, or within DOE. Notes: This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay. This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate. This position may be subject to a background check.
