Berkeley Lab - California - Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s ( ) Division has an opening for an Electrical Engineer - National Lab Project to join the team. In this exciting role, you will lead the design, procurement, installation, and testing needs for the electrical and electronics systems for a suite of experimental facilities. These include upgrades of unique instrumentation as well as new builds of leading-edge systems. The scope includes cable and rack layout and routing, management of power, vacuum, and experimental instrumentation, test planning, and contractor oversight. You will work with a multidisciplinary team to help develop electrical scope, cost, and schedule and find solutions for complex issues involving combinations of new and legacy technology. What You Will Do: Work with a core team of engineers, technicians, and electrical coordinators to implement the new and upgraded experimental systems. Act as a liaison to facility subject matter experts regarding conventional electrical systems and accelerator safety systems, to ensure the team’s understanding of requirements and interfaces. Consult with managers, engineers, and scientific personnel as necessary to understand project requirements and needs. Develop electrical requirements documentation for the new and upgraded experimental systems. Plan, implement and oversee system testing for the new and upgraded experimental systems. Create technical specifications for procurements for the new and upgraded experimental systems. Act as the primary technical interface for subcontractors in the immediate area of expertise. Develop procurement documentation, participate in contract management, and approve invoices to verify work completed. Plan teamwork: identify requirements, tasks, and input into schedules for use in day-to-day team management. Direct the work of engineering staff as required to execute the project in the area of responsibility. Create material necessary for project reporting purposes, and participate in reviews. Additional Responsibilities as needed: May assume responsibility for specific subtasks within the project. May participate in defining and evaluating candidate positions for team roles to be filled. What is Required: B.S. degree, or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a related field and at least 8 years of relevant experience; or equivalent experience. Project management or related management experience in implementing multiple subsystems in parallel in a fixed time frame. Demonstrated experience managing budget and schedule. Experience leading the work of others and giving work direction. Extensive knowledge of CAD tools for schematic capture and mechanical design, such as AutoCAD or Creo, and including cable routing software. Sufficient knowledge of electrical codes and standards to effectively serve the project needs and comply with requirements. Sufficient knowledge of electronics, controls, and distribution systems to enable the development of scope details and planning to serve the project needs and comply with requirements. Adaptability and desire to learn new skills and technologies. Ability to step back and provide perspective on a high systems engineering level, while also being able to guide a technical team on a detailed expert level when necessary. Ability to accurately estimate effort, time, and expenses for the completion of tasks. Ability to make sound and independent technical decisions, solve problems effectively, and lead a diverse team to define and achieve goals. Demonstrated knowledge of mechanical and electrical engineering integration; familiarity with mechanical design and fabrication best practices Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of technicians, engineers, scientists, managers, and vendors. Sound judgment and knowledge of current principles and practices in mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing engineering. Desired Qualifications: M.S. or further advanced degree. At least three years of progressively responsible project management and/or production related work experience. Experience with scientific construction projects, research & development, and/or national laboratory environments. Prior experience bringing one or more significant (high-valued) projects to completion. Advanced expertise and experience in an electrical engineering area directly applicable to accelerator systems, such as: high power supplies, RF, measurements, signal processing, controls. Programming and database experience. Knowledge of and experience with codes such as NEC, LOTO, and NFPA 70E, and with the American National Standards Institute Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) Standard 748-C.
