Engineering Technical Associate

Berkeley Lab - California - Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s ( ) Division has an opening for an Engineering Technical Associate to join the team. In this exciting role, you will provide multifunctional and varied technical support at the journey level in the areas of mechanical fabrication, precision assembly, and high vacuum systems. You will apply engineering, scientific, and other technical concepts and practices with an emphasis on fabrication, assembly of scientific apparatus, high vacuum, and machine tool manufacturing operations. You will investigate, create, develop, apply and document manufacturing methods and techniques for project advancement. You will use professional level experience and skills to solve complex problems to achieve project goals and in accordance with Lab objectives and safety requirements. What You Will Do: Ability to provide resolutions to technical problems of moderately complex scope related to areas of fabrication, assembly, and installation of industrial and scientific equipment, and high vacuum systems. Coordinate scheduling, fabrication, manufacturing, assembly, and testing of components and completed prototype scientific apparatus. Independently advise and assist professional staff and make innovative contributions to improve mechanical design, assembly, and testing of scientific equipment and associated support hardware. Use personal discretion while maintaining general program objectives, lead, coordinate and contribute to the fabrication and manufacturing tasks in support of project areas and objectives. Attend and contribute to design review, safety, and progress meetings. Independently perform duties of an ME Associate, supporting design, assembly, and fabrication. Train and mentor junior staff in vacuum, assembly, manufacturing procedures, fabrication methods, and equipment handling. Coordinate with internal and external LBL groups to complete fabrication, assembly, and integration. Ability to estimate cost and labor effort related to fabrication and installation of industrial and scientific equipment. Additional Responsibilities as needed: Ability to design and document new concepts, parts, and assemblies using 3D CAD based on rough sketches and or oral information. Provide accurate cost and manpower estimates for designs and assemblies. Design, specify, procure and facilitate installation of new mechanical equipment. Maintain, modernize, calibrate, and support fabrication tools and equipment. What is Required: AA/AS/BS degree in mechanical or engineering technology, or the equivalent in industry or military training in a related field. Experience with quality control and inspection methods related to manufacturing. Experience in delicate scientific equipment handling that relates to installation via crane, forklift, and other mechanical assistance tools and operations. Experience and ability to organize and maintain Equipment Handling and Integration hardware and tooling. Experience and ability to lead and or supervise small teams of non-exempt technical personnel. Significant technical knowledge of mechanical engineering and manufacturing, materials, principles and best practices. Ability to interact and communicate efficiently with researchers, engineers, designers, machinists, and other engineering technicians to provide a high level of customer service. Proficiency common computer skills and tasks with the ability to efficiently use applications such as MS Excel and Word Ability to serve as a liaison between project stakeholders. Desired Qualifications: Experience with assembly of small and large parts, and the installation of sub-assemblies into larger assemblies or facilities. Demonstrated experience in 3D CAD/CAM software. Journey level experience with setup and operation of precision machine tools both manual and CNC. Overhead bridge or jib crane, forklift, or other equipment handling experience that could include installation of industrial and or scientific equipment. Notes: This is a full time, 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
