Berkeley Lab's has an opening for a Writer/Editor who will work as part of the Communications team to research and present the history of the Biosciences Area. The Writer/Editor will chronicle the progression of bioscientific research (e.g., nuclear medicine, photosynthesis, genomics, and environmental science) at Berkeley Lab for a period of about 60 years. This history began when Ernest Orlando Lawrence hired his brother, John Lawrence, referred to as the Father of Nuclear Medicine, to work at the Lab. Another key figure in the Lab's bioscientific history was Melvin Calvin, who described the dark photosynthetic cycle, which came to be known as the Calvin Cycle. The Writer/Editor will research the period of biosciences research at Berkeley Lab from the late 1930s to the mid 1990s and produce web content, including text and multimedia elements (e.g. oral histories, archival photos or videos, etc), to communicate the history and achievements of Biosciences Area researchers. They will also present two one-hour seminars, which will be open to the public, about the history of biosciences at Berkeley Lab. What You Will Do: Apply knowledge of historical research methods, tools, and resources, as well as critical-thinking and analytical skills, to identify and gather detailed information about the most significant achievements of Berkeley Lab biosciences researchers. Apply broad knowledge of scientific and engineering concepts to communicate technical and non-technical information for print or digital publication, multimedia, and online or verbal presentation. Perform a variety of scientific and technical writing and editing duties. Apply knowledge of computers, software, and web layout to ensure documents meet quality, budget, and schedule requirements. What is Required: At least 5 years' experience producing technical content and developing technical content for a general audience. Experience and confidence in communicating with both scientific and non-scientific staff. Strong communication skills. Project management skills. Excellent writing and editing skills. Familiarity with working with institutions of higher education. Ability to communicate scientific and technical information to diverse audiences. Expert knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite of software including Word, PowerPoint, and Web technologies including simple image preparation, HTML, CSS, and Web publishing (e.g., WordPress). Working knowledge of graphics and image-editing software (e.g. Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or Preview). Aptitude with photography, video production and editing, producing slideshows. Aptitude with audio production and editing. Strong organizational skills and detail-oriented. Strong interpersonal skills to effectively work within a diverse team environment. Desired Qualifications: Bachelor's or Master's degree (or equivalent experience) in history, library science, journalism/communications, or in a relevant scientific field.
