Senior Research Associate / Research Associate - Analytical Chemistry and Downstream Recovery

Berkeley Lab - California - Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's ( ), has an opening for a Research Associate to join the Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts Process Development Unit (ABPDU).The projects in ABPDU are designed in collaboration with academia/industry in an effort towards development and commercialization of biobased processes. The Research Associate will primarily assist in planning and executing projects in analytical and catalysis laboratories. The Research Associate will work in a dynamic industrial biotech research environment and collaborate with scientists, engineers, research associates to achieve different milestones of multiple projects. Essential to success in this position is to have a basic understanding of chemistry / biochemistry / chemical engineering applicable to advanced biofuel and bioproduct production. This position will be hired as a Research Associate or Senior Research Associate contingent upon the level of experience, skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate. What You Will Do: Assist with conducting analytical, catalysis, and recovery related research experiments. Assist with collecting and analyzing data and deliver data-oriented reports. Execute experiments under the supervision of senior personnel as described in written documentation for biobased process development, related product recovery, and characterization activities. Coordinate with mentors for maintenance of certain equipment and ensure the routine service is performed. Work collaboratively in a fast-paced lab environment on multiple projects supported across industry, academia, and National Labs. Maintain accurate and detailed scientific logbook of all experiments performed, ensuring that projects are well recorded and tracked. Participate in regular team research activities, including literature review, meeting presentation, report preparation, as well as interdisciplinary collaboration. Follow good laboratory practice (GLP) and lab safety protocols and be the one to facilitate the strong safety culture at the ABPDU. Assist with general lab activities such as supply inventory management, clean up, and waste disposal etc. What is Required: B.S. degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or related areas preferred and up to a few years of related experience. Basic knowledge of analytical instruments includes but are not limited to HPLC, GC, bomb calorimeter, rheometer, and 96-well plate-based assays. Exhibit willingness to work cross-functionally and collaboratively, and learn new techniques associated with other functions of the ABPDU. Exhibit exemplary ethical conduct of integrity, honesty, and mutual respect, both intellectually and in interpersonal workplace interactions. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Desired Qualifications: Master's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related areas. Knowledge of engineering statistics (e.g., design of experiments), data processing, and modeling. Relevant experience in lignocellulosic biomass conversion and characterization. This position will be open until filled. This is a full time 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate. This position may be subject to a background check.
