Science Communications & UX Research Student Assistant

Berkeley Lab - California - Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's ( ), has an opening for a Student Assistant to join the National Microbiome Data Collaborative (NMDC) team! The NMDC is a new pilot program that aims to make microbiome data findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) by developing a science gateway. Ensuring that the data standards, analysis workflows, and infrastructure in the NMDC data ecosystem are informed and driven by the microbiome research community is critical to the program's success; community engagement is one of the NMDC's strategic priorities. The Student Assistant will assist with conducting and coding user interviews with microbiome researchers, synthesizing the knowledge learned, and presenting it to relevant technical members of the NMDC team. The usability research will inform the development of the NMDC. The Student Assistant will also assist with content creation for the various NMDC web platforms as a means of engaging with the growing NMDC community. The Student Assistant will work under close supervision within the NMDC Engagement team, will report to the NMDC Scientific Community Engagement Manager, and actively collaborate with team members at Berkeley, Pacific Northwest, Oak Ridge, and Los Alamos National Labs. What You Will Do: Assist with conducting, transcribing, synthesizing, and analyzing usability interviews Share (written/oral) insights from user research activities Develop a content calendar and ensure that the schedule is followed Develop social media content Contribute to the development of content for the website and newsletters What is Required: Full-time undergraduate student enrolled in a life science degree program in good standing Proficiency with the Google Drive platform Strong organizational skills and attention to detail Familiar with social media Excellent written and oral communication skills Desired Qualifications: Undergraduate student years 3-4 preferred Familiar with microbiome, bioinformatics, and/or computer science concepts Experience with user research and/or usability design concepts Experience with science communications Notes: This is a part-time (10 hours a week), 6 month, student assistant appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. Salary will be predetermined based on student step rates. This position may be subject to a background check.
