Berkeley Lab - California - Berkeley Lab's has an opening for a Project Scientist position. The Project Scientist will develop research in an integrated project in the area of brain cell imaging, cell biology of neuronal function. The project addresses the cause of neurodegeneration and has a strong background in general imaging approaches including FRET, FRAP, time lapse imaging, 3-D reconstruction, video production, and image processing. The Project Scientist will take the lead in refinement of existing techniques, the development of novel approaches for imaging and image processing, and must be familiar with basic preparation of neuronal cell isolations relevant to the different techniques. What You Will Do: Independent development of research projects with appropriate command of methodology. Maintain an organized and well-documented laboratory notebook. Command and familiarity with imaging and molecular/cell skills. Command and familiarity of proteins biochemistry and cell biology (if involved in sample preparation). Prepare manuscripts and participate in writing grant applications and preparation of meeting presentation. Review and mentor the work of support staff related to the research. This includes directing the work of Postdoctoral Fellows, Research Associates, technical support staff, and students relevant to the project. Responsible and accountable for proper conduct of the project or activity. Publish in peer-reviewed journals. Present research at seminars and conferences. Assist PI in developing grant proposals. What is Required: 2-5 years of relevant experience beyond the highest degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biophysics, or a related field. Deep understanding of imaging and a working knowledge or strong interest in neuroscience. Deep understanding of cell biology approaches, imaging, Image J and spectral analysis software, and molecular technologies. Areas of expertise must include one or more of the following: Visible light imaging, cell biology background, neuroscience, good computer skills, bioinformatics, statistics. Desired Qualifications: PhD degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biopysics, or a related field. Familiarity with cell and tissue sample preparation. Strong interest in neuroscience; neuroscience background and neuronal tissue/cell analysis is desirable. Familiarity with metabolism and Seahorse analysis. Interest in mitochondria. Familiarity with Python. Familiarity with bioinformatics and statistics. The posting shall remain open until the position is filled. Notes: This is a full time, 1 year 6 month term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years. M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
