Mumbai: Several Chinese apps including Snack Video, Zili and Resso are among the top 100 free Android apps in the country that have yet to be banned, even as the government barred 118 more Chinese apps on Wednesday. Snack Video is a Singapore-based app that is seen as a TikTok alternative and whose parent, Kuaishou Technology, is a popular Chinese software company backed by Chinese internet conglomerate Tencent. It is the top free app on Google Play Store charts right now and has been so for the last many weeks since the first set of Chinese apps was banned late in June.Zili, an app for short-videos and funny sketches owned by Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi, is also among the top 100 on Play Store not to have faced a ban. ET reported in July that Zili was among a list of 275 Chinese apps under scrutiny by the government for alleged violations of national security and user privacy.TikTok owner ByteDance’s music-streaming app Resso, another Chinese app in the top 100 at the moment, was also part of the list but has not been banned from app stores yet. Resso generated 1.4 million downloads in India in July and picked up another 1.5 million in August, according to the latest data from Sensor Tower that was shared with ET.
