Senior Scientific Engineering Associate (Grid-Interactive Buildings)

Berkeley Lab - California - Berkeley Lab's Building Technologies and Urban Systems Division (BTUS) is looking for a Senior Scientific Engineering Associate to join their Windows & Envelope Materials Group, focusing on Grid-Interactive Buildings! In this role, you will develop, implement, evaluate, and promote integrated demand-side management systems (DSM) (e.g., controllable building envelope, lighting, and HVAC systems) in combination with distributed energy resources (DER) (e.g., electrical and thermal storage, renewable energy sources, and smart inverters). What You Will Do: Develop, implement, and evaluate innovative algorithms for modeling and predictive control of innovative DSM and/or DER energy systems. Develop and apply advanced model predictive control (MPC) tools to support the development of climate-based, simulated evaluations of the innovative control systems. Implement the algorithms with the requisite hardware (build prototype with sensors, electronics, and microcontrollers) for low-energy commercial building applications. Develop and apply experimental methods to measure and evaluate the energy- and non-energy performance (indoor environmental quality, control hysteresis) of the controlled systems in laboratory, full-scale testbed, and occupied building settings. Develop and design experimental methods to measure the performance of distributed energy systems to develop control algorithms coded in hardware and software modules for integration with the utility grid. Provide multifunctional technical support, broadly applying principles, theories, and/or technical concepts in science/ engineering in combination with working knowledge of related fields. What is Required: Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or a related field and a minimum of 4 years of professional relevant experience in using building energy analysis programs (such as EnergyPlus, Radiance, and Modelica) for design and evaluation of innovative building envelope, lighting, and/or HVAC control systems for energy-efficient building design and operations or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong knowledge in developing integrated envelope-, lighting-, and HVAC-related model predictive control (MPC) algorithms for thermal load management, lighting/daylighting, renewables, thermal and electrical energy storage, occupant requirements, and energy cost minimization. Strong experience in Python and scientific packages such as Pandas, Matplotlib, Tensorflow. Experience in Field testing advanced façade technologies and control schemes. Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team setting, and share insights relevant to other team projects. Strong written and verbal communication skills. What We Prefer: Advanced Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or a related field. Required Application Materials: The following materials must be submitted with your application to be considered for this position. Cover Letter - Describe your interest in this position and the relevance of your background. Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume. The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on October 8, 2020. Notes: This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 1 year, Term appointment with the possibility of renewal for up to a maximum of 5 years total or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. Salary is commensurate with experience. This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment. This position will be remote initially but limited to individuals residing in the United States tentatively until early 2021 due to COVID-19. Once the Bay Area shelter-in-place restrictions are lifted, work may be performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Learn About Us: (LBNL) addresses the world's most urgent scientific challenges by advancing sustainable energy, protecting human health, creating new materials, and revealing the origin and fate of the universe. Founded in 1931, Berkeley Lab's scientific expertise has been recognized with 13 Nobel prizes. The University of California manages Berkeley Lab for the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. The Building Technology and Urban Systems ( ) Division advances energy efficiency and demand response in the built environment-one of the world's most critical energy and environmental challenges. Through research, partnership programs, and software tools, we promote energy and cost savings while improving comfort, health, and safety. The Group conducts research, development, and demonstration projects to reduce the energy-related impacts of building envelopes, for both new and existing buildings, in all climates. The scope includes R&D on new technologies and systems, extensive lab and field performance testing, and development of new simulation tools to predict properties and energy impacts. Projects are targeted to assist manufacturers and suppliers in developing the next generation of highly efficient solutions and to guide designers, specifiers, and building owners in selecting the most appropriate efficiency solutions for their homes and buildings.
