Scientific Engineering Associate (Energy Efficiency Standards)

Berkeley Lab - California - Berkeley Lab’s Energy Analysis and Environmental Impacts Division (EAEI) is looking for a Scientific Engineering Associate to join their Energy Efficiency Standards Department (EES)! In this position, you will play a key role in developing data inputs and analytical models related to appliance energy use, life-cycle cost analysis, and estimating the national economic and environmental impacts associated with the adoption of minimum energy conservation standards. You may also assist in developing new analytical tools for cross-referencing various data sets and for performing analyses to yield new insights into appliance energy consumption. We are looking for a talented early-career professional with a technical background in engineering or physical sciences that has strong skills in data analysis, applied statistics, and Python programming. What You Will Do: Create and develop analytical models related to the engineering and economic aspects of energy-efficiency standards for residential appliances. The purpose of the models is to characterize distributions in consumer energy, water, and life-cycle cost, project future product shipments, and estimate the aggregate national impacts of efficiency standards. Develop software tools for analysis of the data, and perform quantitative and qualitative synthesis of findings. Provide technical support on troubleshooting analytical tools and models. Gather, process, and review data from multiple sources, such as field measurements, equipment testing, surveys, and publicly available information. Perform scientific literature reviews, develop presentations, and assist with writing technical documentation and reports. What is Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Statistics, Energy and Resources, Physical Sciences, or a related technical discipline and a minimum of 2 years of professional technical experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Expertise in developing analytical tools, and numerical modeling. Proficiency with MS Office applications. Demonstrated experience using Python for data analysis, and capability of using R, Stata, or SAS for statistical analysis. Proven capability of using Excel for data management, advanced spreadsheet programming, quantitative analysis, mathematical modeling, and graphing. Ability to work independently, interact effectively in a team, and communicate clearly with colleagues sharing creative/innovative thinking. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to present engineering and economic models and tools to a non-specialist audience. Strong attention to detail. What We Prefer: Advanced Degree in Engineering, Statistics, Energy and Resources, Physical Sciences, or a related technical discipline. Familiarity with the US federal regulatory process, especially as it relates to energy efficiency. Experience applying engineering and economics concepts in the context of energy efficiency (e.g., life-cycle cost, net present value of efficiency improvements). Experience manipulating and processing large datasets and time-series data. Familiarity with basic principles of relational databases and SQL. Experience with standard software development tools and platforms (e.g., Linux, git). Familiarity with VBA and statistical sampling. For full consideration, please apply by May 5, 2021, with the following application materials: Cover Letter - Describe your interest in this position and the relevance of your background. Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume. Notes: This is a full-time, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 1 year, Term appointment with the possibility of renewal up to a maximum of 5 years total or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. Salary is commensurate with experience. This position may be subject to a background check.
