The Bharatiya Janata Party has made changes to its campaign plan in West Bengal due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases. The Election Commission of India recently revised the campaign guidelines and the BJP has now become more serious about following Covid-19 protocols.“In all the public meetings, social distancing is being followed,” Kailash Vijayvargiya, BJP general secretary in-charge of West Bengal told ET. “You have noticed that sitting arrangements at public meetings are made under strict Covid-19 protocols.” BJP has asked all party candidates to distribute masks and sanitizers during their public meetings.During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally on April 17, people gathered there had to strictly follow Covid-19 protocols. The party has also made changes in Modi’s upcoming rally programme. Earlier, the prime minister was to visit on April 21 and April 24 to address two rallies on each day.Since the EC has banned campaigning 72 hours before voting from the earlier 48 hours, campaigning for the seventh phase would come to end on April 23. Under the new plan, Modi will visit the state once on April 23 to address four rallies — in Malda, Murshidabad, Sewli and South Kolkata. The schedule of other party leaders will remain almost the same with stricter Covid-19 guidelines. The candidates will also focus on small door-to-door meetings and avoid large gatherings. “Covid-19 is a concern for everyone including our party and we will take utmost care for the safety of people of West Bengal,” Raj Kamal Pathak, BJP state vice president told ET.
