Berkeley Lab - California - Berkeley Lab’s Energy Analysis and Environmental Impacts Division (EAEI) is looking for an Associate Data Scientist to join their Energy Efficiency Standards (EES) Department! In this role, you will design, develop, and utilize complex methods, processes, and tools for data collection, data management, empirical analysis, and numerical modeling in support of the US Department of Energy (DOE). This position will focus on data relating to residential and commercial applications. You will assist in the development of new analytical tools for cross-referencing different data sets and perform standardized analyses on the processed data to yield new insights into appliance and equipment energy consumption in the US building stock. We are looking for a talented data-driven early-career professional with a technical background in engineering, data science, or the physical sciences, that has a strong skill set in data analysis and programming. What You Will Do: Create, develop and maintain a broad array of numerical models and programming scripts or tools in order to analyze challenging technical and energy policy issues. Gather, process, and review data from multiple sources, such as field measurements, equipment testing, surveys, and other available information. Create, manage, and utilize complex databases with technical and economic data. Identify meaningful insights from data. Investigate, create and develop new methods and apply those concepts to energy use and lifecycle cost analysis. Contribute to federal register notices, technical support documents, and memos, summarizing methods, data sources, results, conclusions, and/or energy and economic implications. Develop presentations for public meetings. Manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines and uncertain schedules. What is Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Physics, Statistics, Energy and Water Sources, or a related discipline and a minimum of 2 years of related technical experience with quantitative modeling and analysis, data management, and data visualization or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong analysis skills in Python. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including a high attention to detail and the ability to identify and obtain information from diverse sources and contribute to technical reports. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within a team. What We Prefer: Familiarity with the US federal regulatory process, especially as it relates to energy efficiency. Familiarity with appliance engineering models and cost-benefit analysis in the context of energy efficiency. Experience with database management and data exploration using Django and Superset. Experience with standard software development tools and platforms (e.g., Linux, git). Previous research experience in laboratory or field.
