US electric vehicle and clean energy company Tesla Inc has zeroed in on Mumbai’s Lower Parel-Worli business district to set up its first India office including a retail outlet, said persons with direct knowledge of the development. The California-headquartered company is evaluating a few ready commercial projects in the vicinity for a 40,000 sq ft office-cum-retail space to kickstart its India operations soon, they said."Blackstone Group-owned One World Centre, erstwhile One Indiabulls Centre, is the one of the key contenders for the deal. The transaction is currently at the technical stage and is likely to be inked soon after the due diligence," said one of the persons cited above.The One World Centre commercial complex is owned and operated by Nucleus Office Parks, a Blackstone Group entity.Eyeing India Market for Some TimeNucleus Office Parks houses standalone office assets not part of alliances with Indian developers. The office tower already counts Morgan Stanley, American Express, Aditya Birla Group companies, the Kingdom of Spain and IDFC First Bank among marquee occupiers.Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari recently urged the Elon Musk company to start production of electric vehicles in India as soon as possible. The Indian government has assured Tesla of help in establishing its industrial clusters in the country.Tesla has been eyeing the electric car market in India for some time. ET reported earlier that its global senior director David Jon Feinstein, chief accounting officer Vaibhav Taneja and Bengaluru-based entrepreneur Venkatrangam Sreeram are on the board of the India unit, according to government filings.
