Senior Fermentation Engineer

Berkeley Lab - California - Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's ( In this exciting role, you will work in the BSE Division as part of the Fermentation and Recovery team at the Essential to success is the command of a broad spectrum of biochemical and chemical engineering unit operations applicable to advanced biofuel and biochemical production. You will perform research activities including scheduling and project management, experimental design, execution of deconstruction unit operations at bench and 100L-scale, execution of processes for bench and pilot-scale fermentation (2 L to 300 L), execution of recovery and purification processes (filtration, centrifugation, distillation, etc.), and execution of associated analytical methods. What You Will Do: Independently plan and execute fermentations at 250mL and 2L scale, including preparing media, batching bioreactors, calibrating equipment, sampling through the process, and operating real time sampling and in-line and off-line analytical equipment including HPLC, Sartorius Ambr, offgas MS, etc. Independently plan and execute experiments for optimization of biomass-to-biofuels processing, including hypothesis generation, experimental design, troubleshooting, and interpretation of key results. Execute biomass deconstruction and fermentation process optimization campaigns at bench and pilot scale. Execute multiple recovery unit operations including centrifugation, liquid-liquid extraction, distillation, condensation, and solvent extraction. Execute associated analytical chemistry, including GC, HPLC, offgas MS, and photometric analysis. Perform data analysis and prepare presentations to report findings to collaborators and the larger ABPDU team. Prepare and submit manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Serve as a work lead or supervisor for interns and junior research staff. Maintain exemplary ethical conduct of integrity, honesty, and mutual respect, both intellectually and in interpersonal workplace interactions. Contribute to laboratory organization and maintenance of a strong safety culture at the ABPDU. Contribute to a strong culture of support for diversity, equity, and inclusion at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL). Incorporate statistical design of experiment approaches using JMP or similar software. Implement techniques to assess on-line and real-time fermentation and recovery performance. Assist with preparation and submission of research grants. What is Required: B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related area with 3-5 years experience in bioprocess engineering, including experience with both biomass deconstruction and fermentation with both aerobic and anaerobic host organisms, preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in handling, maintaining, and growing microorganisms during fermentation and recovery/analysis of their products. Experience with downstream processing unit operations, including distillation, liquid-liquid extraction, and solid-liquid separation. Experience with bioconversions involving gaseous feedstocks or products. Knowledge of analytical techniques required for biomanufacturing research and development, including offgas analysis, photometric analysis, GC, and HPLC. Exhibit willingness to work cross-functionally and collaboratively, and learn new techniques associated with other functions of the ABPDU. Strong data management skills for sample archiving and maintenance of good laboratory experimental records. Desired Qualifications: M.S. degree or Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related area.
