Research Associate

Berkeley Lab - California - Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s ( ), has an opening for a Research Associate. The Research Associate will be a part of a multi-disciplinary team of biophysicists, chemists, and materials scientists assisting in the development and characterization of biological materials. Our team designs, synthesizes and characterizes proteins, protein assemblies, biopolymers, and protein-nanoparticle conjugates. With oversight from the supervisor, the Research Associate will be responsible for semi-routine research assignments including growing bacterial cultures and purifying recombinant proteins, and assisting in daily floor operations. Job duties will include the preparation and maintenance of cell cultures, protein expression, preparing protein samples for characterization experiments, assisting in the onboarding of new users, and inventory management. The position will additionally have the opportunity to get hands-on experience in techniques such as optical microscopy, bioconjugation methods, and other bioanalytical methods. The Research Associate will be required to carefully document their work in a laboratory notebook and communicate results in group meetings. What You Will Do: Prepare and maintain bacterial cell cultures Purify proteins using standard methods Prepare proteins for fluorescence microscopy, mass spectrometry, and for X-ray irradiation experiments Participate in collection, processing and analysis of X-ray data and microscopy images Assist with onboarding users and training on instrumentation and software Provide recommendations for technical enhancements to existing methodologies and lab practices Help maintain safety documentation and training, and assist with chemical management Contribute to technical reports, policy support documentation, and training documentation and videos Help coordinate instrument repairs and service contracts Assist with ordering supplies Additional Responsibilities as needed: Contribute to the writing of manuscripts and proposals What is Required: Bachelor’s degree preferred in microbiology, biochemistry, chemistry, or related field preferred and/or equivalent experience Hands-on experience in cultivating microorganisms, basic molecular biology techniques, and familiarity with standard biological lab equipment Experience in analyzing experimental data Excellent organization skills and self-motivation Ability to work as part of a diverse team Attention to detail Good oral and written communication skills Desired Qualifications: Experience with optical microscopy, protein expression and/or bioanalytical methods For full consideration, please apply by May 7, 2021. Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement. This position may be subject to a background check.
