Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced the launch of an ‘India-US climate and clean energy Agenda 2030’ partnership to address climate change. Modi made the announcement at the Leaders’ Summit on Climate, hosted by US President Joe Biden in the run up to global climate meet, COP 26, scheduled in Glasgow in November.“President Biden and I are launching the India US clean energy agenda to mobilise investment, demonstrate clean technologies and enable green collaboration,” Modi said in his address at the two virtual summit addressed by 40 global leaders and heads of state. The announcement of an Indo-US collaboration came days after US Special climate envoy John Kerry’s India visit where he called on the PM to drive through a strong climate action plan.Several leaders who attended the summit announced emission cut plans. While President Biden said the US emission will be 50% to 52% lower in 2030 than levels in 2005, Chinese President Xi Jinping mentioned his country’s 2060 zero net target as well as plans to reduce coal consumption starting from 2025. Modi said that India’s share in per capita carbon footprint was a fraction of the global average and that the country was taking ‘bold steps’ despite huge developmental challenges.
