Career Track Research Scientist - Computer Science for Novel Hardware

Berkeley Lab - California - The Computational Chemistry, Materials and Climate (CCMC) Group has an opening for a Career Track Research Scientist - Computer Science for Novel Hardware. As a member of the CCMC group, you will be responsible for developing research opportunities and performing research in computer science and engineering. You will focus on the development of new and novel methodologies, algorithms and software to enable efficient code generation, develop new mathematical frameworks for solving algorithmic building blocks and scientific applications on next-generation hardware platforms containing novel energy efficient technologies such as FPGAs, GPUs and custom chips. This position will be part of a multi-disciplinary team that will be developing custom hardware acceleration for scientific applications and algorithmic building blocks. What You Will Do: Contribute to and provide task level leadership in research on code generation tools for next-generation hardware platforms. Contribute to and provide task level leadership in research to create novel algorithmic techniques to remap and redesign existing algorithms FFTs and linear algebra algorithms so that they map efficiently to emerging energy-efficient computer architectures, with an emphasis on FPGAs, GPUs and custom chips. Contribute to and provide task level leadership in developing and optimizing scientific applications for modern computing platforms with energy-efficient components. Develop new funding opportunities relevant to laboratory research efforts in scientific computing and computer science. Document work and results in the form of journal papers and conference proceedings. Present work and results at scientific meetings. Manage development effort for medium to large scientific applications at the lab. What is Required: PhD degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a similar field. Experience in developing systematic mathematical methodologies to enable efficient code generation tools for scientific applications, FFTs and linear algebra operations. Experience developing and optimizing applications for modern energy-efficient computer architectures, especially GPUs and FPGAs, with a deep understanding of advanced computer and systems architecture (CPU, caches, memory systems), and their contributions to the overall system performance. Experience with hardware description language, and FPGA development environments. Experience with using and developing cutting edge software, and/or hardware prototypes in a research environment. Highly self-motivated and willing to learn new technologies and applications. Extensive knowledge of C++, C, MPI, OpenMP, and other parallel programming models. Experience contributing to large scientific applications with many contributors – including software-carpentry and maintainability experience. Excellent record of scientific publications. Desired Qualifications: Understanding of higher-level hardware development languages such as CHISEL, SPIRAL, or BlueSpec is desirable, as is experience with parameterized hardware generation techniques. Deep understanding of advanced computer and systems architecture (CPU, caches, memory systems), and their contributions to the overall system performance. Demonstrated creativity, initiative and ability to design, develop and implement complex solutions consistent with emerging technology challenges. Experience using performance analysis tools (e.g. hardware performance counters and code instrumentation frameworks like Tau) will also be beneficial to understand performance of complex scientific applications involved in the study. Experience with Continuous Integration (CI) techniques. Notes: This is a full-time 5 year, career-track term appointment that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
