Berkeley Lab - California - Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s ( ), has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar to join the in Emeryville, CA. The Postdoc will fulfill a key position in the group for planning and executing R&D and scale-up projects applicable in advanced biofuel and bioproduct production including deconstruction, fermentation, and recovery. The Postdoc will collect, analyze, and report data from laboratory and mini-pilot scale processes. Essential to success is the command of a broad spectrum of biochemical/chemical engineering unit operations and curiosity in process scale-up research. As these processes become established, the Postdoc will take on mentoring and training responsibilities, writing publications, helping author grant and patent applications, and assuming a greater role of intellectual leadership. This is a highly collaborative project, and it is expected that the Postdoc will be open to working with several research groups between LBNL and UC Berkeley. The learnings from these studies will not only be published but also tested with industrial collaborators at the ABPDU. What You Will Do: Project and experiment planning, including the use of statistical design of experiment approaches, using JMP or similar software. Execute experiments for industrial and academic collaborators with bioreactors at 250 ml, 2L, and 300L scale. Collect and analyze data and report findings in written and oral presentations for staff and facility collaborators. Maintain an accurate and detailed scientific logbook of all experiments performed. Ensure that others could duplicate results. Write manuscripts and participate in the authoring of grant proposals and patent applications, and otherwise contribute significantly to the intellectual growth of the organization. Routine maintenance of equipment and laboratory facilities. Perform system suitability testing, statistical process control, root cause failure analysis, and other problem solving and prevention techniques. Draft manuscripts describing experimental work. Present results and discuss plans with funders. What is Required: PhD degree in chemical engineering, microbiology, biochemistry, or a similar field. Previous record of publications in peer-reviewed journals. Experience in working with bioreactors. Understanding of lignocellulosic feedstock characterization and impact on fermentation. Experience in statistical design of experiments. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Interest in mentoring and developing others. Detail oriented and highly organized. Desired Qualifications: Experience in analyzing and interpreting -omic data with strong quantitative/computational skills. Familiarity with microbial imaging techniques. Notes: This is a full-time 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree. This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes. Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. This position may be subject to a background check.
