Principal Research Associate

Berkeley Lab - California - Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s ( ), has an opening for a Principal Research Associate to join the Feedstocks Division of the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI). The successful candidate will perform research activities aimed at the development of bioenergy crops to produce biofuels and bioproducts. This position will lead the JBEI Plant Growth Facilities and coordinate research activities associated with the Feedstocks Division. The Principal Research Associate will function as a liaison between Feedstocks Division and LEAD (Life-Cycle, Economics and Agronomy Division) teams with respect to planning and permitting of field testing of transgenic plants. What You Will Do: Maintain the JBEI Plant Growth Facilities. Responsibilities include inventory, supplies, pest control, and organization and maintenance of logs. Develop and execute plans for maintenance of growth facilities to shifting requirements Obtain permits for pesticide use in growth facilities Maintain and cultivate plants. (e.g., Arabidopsis, tobacco, and sorghum) Provide training to users for use of the Plant Growth Facilities and associated Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) procedures. Monitor and control pests and diseases. Coordinate and organize booking schedules for plant growth room and cabinets. Oversee storage and registration of seeds. Assist with application of permits for field trials, development of protocols for transgenic field trials, and permits for transportation of transgenic materials. Timely communication of reports to USDA APHIS BRS. Ensure adherence to permits and participate in inspections by regulatory agencies Coordinate employee exit. (especially sample storage, transfer, and registration) Liaison with the JBEI Director of Lab Management staff for the Feedstocks Division. What is Required: Bachelor's degree with six years experience in independent design, processing, and analysis of data. Experience coordinating a multi-user facility. Experience with maintenance and growth of plants for research. Familiarity and experience with plant molecular biology and plant transformation. Experience with APHIS permit procedures and requirements. Strong organizational and record keeping skills. Effective interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work in a team environment with a diverse group of scientific and technical personnel. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Desired Qualifications: Master’s degree preferred Experience with publishing scientific research. Knowledge and experience with scientific EH&S procedures.
