Research Associate

Berkeley Lab - California - Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's ( ), has an opening for a Computational Biology Research Associate. In this exciting role, you will perform semi-routine research assignments related to SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19. The primary purpose of this position is to apply computational methods, including machine learning and AI, to new datasets to help solve urgent problems related to the disease. Specifically, the Research Associate will assist in developing a new machine learning approach replacing the graph convolutional front end of graph convolutional policy networks with a hypergraph generalization and developing hypergraph convolutional policy networks. The Research Associate will apply this new deep learning architecture to molecular design and molecular dynamics in the search for effective antivirals against SARS-CoV-2. What You Will Do: Develop and implement machine learning and AI approaches aimed at studying COVID-19. Perform computational modelling and minimal analysis. Work in COVID-19 projects involving human populations, demographic information, and health outcomes. Develop the mathematical formulation of hypergraph convolutional policy networks for molecular design. Implement codes in PyTorch, and run using molecular dynamics simulation data and the ZINC15K database as training for protein-small molecule interactions. Design and optimize lead candidate antivirals targeted to both host and viral proteins and pathways. Contribute to discussions in hyperspectral imaging for viral diagnostics and characterization. What is Required: Bachelor's degree preferred and up to a few years related experience. Proficient computational skills. Proficient in Python and PyTorch programming. Experience analyzing complex datasets. Experience implementing machine learning and AI strategies. Notes: This is a full time, 6 month term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes. This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment. This position will be remote. Learn about us! Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology Mission: Linking genome biology to ecosystem dynamics. Vision: Sustainable solutions to energy and environmental challenges developed through mechanistic understanding of ecosystem dynamics. Approach: We develop systems-level models using integrated molecular observation and controlled manipulation of model organisms and defined biomes to design and test interventions that promote beneficial outcomes. Berkeley Lab (LBNL) addresses the world's most urgent scientific challenges by advancing sustainable energy, protecting human health, creating new materials, and revealing the origin and fate of the universe.
