Physics Postdoctoral Scholar

Berkeley Lab - California - (LBNL) (ATAP) Division has an opening for a Physics Postdoctoral Scholar to join the quantum bit control team. (BACI) Center has a long and successful history in developing control systems for advanced applied physics projects, including precision digital control systems for particle accelerators, fiber-based laser combination technology development and quantum computing. We are currently developing a new FPGA-based quantum bit control system called QubiC. We have recently demonstrated the essential functionality of the system on superconducting qubits with a prototype system consisting of RF and analog front-end circuits, digital signal processing and application programming interface. In this exciting role, you will conduct R&D within the Center as a key member to advance the control and instrumentation for quantum computing. You will participate in the rapidly evolving quantum computing technologies by developing the FPGA-based control systems for a wide range of advanced qubit technologies, which may include the superconducting circuits, the neutral atoms, and the trapped ions platforms. You will participate and contribute to multiple projects and programs at LBNL, including the QuantISED Program, the project and the Quantum System Accelerator (QSA) center. What You Will Do: Participate and improve the current on-going development of the quantum bit control system (QubiC). Design and implement modules in hardware, FPGA gateware and software needed to improve the system performance and scalability. Explore new technologies for quantum bit control system. Implement quantum characterization verification and validation (QCVV) with the QubiC system. Work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment. Document and communicate research progress in reports and oral presentations may require participate in meetings, workshops, reviews, conferences, and publish in refereed journals. What is Required: Ph.D. degree in physics, applied physics, electronic engineering, or a related field within the last 3 years. R&D experience in one or more of the following technologies: The RF and electronics hardware design, including the printed circuit board design and testing and chassis to system design. The FPGA gateware design and verification on different FPGA chips. The low-level software driver and API development. Demonstrated programming capability and experience in Python or Verilog, SystemVerilog. Experience in system diagnostic with lab testing equipment, such as oscilloscope, network analyzer, spectrum analyzer, chip scope etc. Excellent oral and written communications. Be able to work productively and independently, and be as a team member to work collaboratively. Desired Qualifications: Experience with open-source CAD programs e.g. KiCAD and FreeCAD. Familiar with Xilinx FPGA development tool chain and the open source simulation & verification (e.g. Verilator). Programing in a Linux environment. Knowledge of quantum information science and experimental and analytical experience. Knowledge of machine learning. Knowledge of integrated optics. Notes: This is a full-time 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree. This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes. Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values at Berkeley Lab. Our excellence can only be fully realized by faculty, students, and staff who share our commitment to these values. Successful candidates for our faculty positions will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to advancing equity and inclusion. Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Equal Employment Opportunity: Berkeley Lab is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, or protected veteran status.
