Part Time Associate Data Scientist (Sustainable Transportation Initiative)

Berkeley Lab - California - Berkeley Lab’s Energy Analysis and Environmental Impacts Division (EAEI) is looking for a Part-Time Associate Data Scientist to join their Sustainable Transportation Initiative! In this role, you will be responsible for managing data analytics for a variety of transportation-related data sources. Your focus will be on addressing data quality issues, data processing using script-based pipelines that maintain provenance, evaluating results of our large-scale urban simulation results for a variety of scenarios, comparing and contrasting scenario results to suggest next-generation transportation management and policies. This role will operate in a fast-paced environment where every day brings new challenges and new opportunities. You will be supporting the research infrastructure necessary to support Smart Cities projects by analyzing and processing transportation data for use in the modeling of regional-scale transportation networks. Specific projects include the Big Data Systems for Mobility effort on behalf of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Vehicle Technologies Office. We are looking for a talented data-driven early-career professional with a technical background in computer science, data science or engineering, that has a strong skill set in data analysis and programming. What You Will Do: Perform data analysis on the trajectory and volume of vehicles on traffic networks. Integrate analytical outputs into regional-scale models. Work with large CSV data files and SQL to model multidimensional datasets. Provide analytical and creative solutions based on robust data analytic methods. Interface with other project members to support Smart Cities Research Center requirements. Respond to high-priority requests from external program management. Own the maintenance of ongoing metrics, reports, analyses, and dashboards to drive research progress. Recognize and adopt best practices in reporting and analysis: data integrity, test design, analysis, validation, and documentation. Write ad-hoc reporting queries of data sources. Analyze and solve problems at their root, stepping back to understand the broader context. What is Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Math, Finance, Statistics, or a related field, and a minimum of 2 years of related professional experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with transportation computer modeling and data analytics, statistical modeling, machine learning, and using Python, R, Julia, or other statistical/machine learning software. Experience with Docker and running containers on AWS ECS. Strong understanding of data models and metadata to support large-scale data pipeline processing with the ability to extract, transform, and load data from a wide variety of data sources. Knowledge of PostGres and Amazon Web Services (AWS) including ECS, S3. Strong communication and presentation skills. Exceptionally strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to present information to a variety of diverse audiences using a high level of scientific judgment and initiative.
