Berkeley Lab - California - (LBNL) Division has an opening for a Student Assistant to join the team. In this exciting role, you will work under close supervision within the ALS-U engineering group and participate in the engineering effort to upgrade the (ALS). At this time, we are looking for students that are more interested in CAD and design work. They will work on projects geared towards design, large assemblies, and manufacturing drawings. You will have ample opportunities to get trained in the specific engineering tools used at LBNL and that will be necessary for your work. The is a dynamic national scientific user facility that provides thousands of scientists from around the world access to bright beams of x-rays, infrared, and extreme ultraviolet light for scientific studies and technology development in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. The ALS is a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades. The ALS-U project is an ongoing project at LBNL that will ensure the facility's leadership in this field for the next decades. It is an exciting time to join our growing team! What You Will Do: Assist in assembling and document as-built documentation. Perform 3D modeling and design work using Creo Parametric CAD software. Convert the 3D model to 2D engineering drawings. Work on smaller scale design projects including FEA analysis. Additional Responsibilities as needed: Assist with other engineering work related to the Advanced Light Source Upgrade project. Assist with the development of engineering work processes and documentation. What is Required: Full-time student in good standing during the semester enrolled in an engineering program or similar technical program. Basic understanding of engineering principles. Proficiency with one or more mechanical 3D CAD modeling tools (experience with mechanical CAD models preferred). Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Doc platform. Good written and verbal communication skills and ability to make clear presentations. Programming experience. Curiosity and willingness to learn! Desired Qualifications: Technical writing experience. Experience with CREO Parametric. Notes: This is a part-time, 6 month, student assistant appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. Part-time, 8-16 hours/week, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime. This position may be subject to a background check.
