The position functions as a support scientist and is responsible for research in the broad area of integrated design and management of irrigation systems used in semi-arid and arid irrigated areas and the development of crop coefficients and water requirements for irrigated crops grown in the Western U.S. The primary duties for this position include: participating as a key member in team research designing and managing crop irrigation systems, characterizing crop water use as a function of irrigation methods and soil and environmental conditions, determining crop coefficients and water requirements, developing and validating water management models suitable for design and management of irrigation systems and irrigation scheduling; and assistance in publishing research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Knowledge required: Advanced degrees in Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Hydrology, or Water Resources Management. Working knowledge of irrigation systems design and operations, crop evapotranspiration, water and solute movement in saturated and unsaturated soils, plant-water relations, and some knowledge of mathematical modeling and computer programming.
