At the start of the pandemic, group chats went into overdrive — friends, co-workers, book clubs, boredom support groups, etc. But now, chats are floundering and you’re stuck with a hundred new groups with a trillion message alerts popping up. Ping, ping, ping, ping! You want out. Here’s how to leave without rocking the boat: BE HONEST If you don’t want to create any drama, send a breakup message to the group before exiting. Write out a text that explains that you are trying to de-clutter your chats or have developed a zero in box obsession. Mention that anyone who wants to reach out to you individually can do so, so that no one in the group takes offence. DISCREET EXIT If the chat has been inactive for some time, then the virtual version of slipping out the door works well here. Chances are that no one will notice if the group isn’t in frequent use. If the content shared in the group is not your cup of tea, then by all means leave. No explanation needed. CRY TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES If the group chat is active and you’re tired of the constant message alerts, fake a technical difficulty. Perhaps your new phone is having trouble syncing with your instant messaging, or you have a new number. But you always run the risk of being added back by a thoughtful group member; better to opt for a clean break. MUTE NOTIFICATIONS There’s an option to keep the peace. Simply mute notifications. This lets you stay in the group, but won’t set you off with the persistent pings, especially if the group size is large. With smaller chats, people might wonder why you don’t pitch in with the chat. Cry technical difficulties then.
