Computer Systems Engineer in Machine Learning Technologies for Healthcare

Berkeley Lab - California - Berkeley Lab’s Computational Biology Group in the has an immediate opening for a Computer Systems Engineer in Machine Learning Technologies for Healthcare to design, implement, and test deep learning models and analytical capabilities for the analysis and integration of large data to improve health care outcomes. Specifically, the Computer Systems Engineer will work on the development of NLP-based methods for information extraction from the unstructured data in Electronic Health Records as well as other textual data. What You Will Do: Utilize machine learning techniques such as iterative random forest and transformer, and NLP techniques such as CLEVER and BERT to design, develop, implement and test deep learning models to extract life events from vast healthcare data to improve the current predictions of high-risk in suicide prevention. Develop large-scale NLP methods to extract features from Electronic Health Records and surveys. Store data and codes on a shared repository that can be accessed by the research team for future review and experimentation. Prepare and maintain code description, tutorials, and data analyses. Present results and findings to research teams and stakeholders. What is Required: Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 2 years of related experience; or an advanced degree without experience; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience. Proven knowledge and experience with the design, implementation, and testing of deep learning models and analytical capabilities, especially the CLEVER and BERT NLP methods. Demonstrated experience extracting knowledge from real health record data. Experience analyzing research data. Demonstrated analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot problems of large scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. Excellent interpersonal skills for working in a diverse team environment. Desired Qualifications: Master’s degree in Bioinformatics and at least 6 months of related experience. Notes: This is a full-time 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
