Multiple variants are driving the continued surge in Kerala unlike in Maharashtra and the Northeast where Delta is at work, Insacog assessments show. Experts have suggested at recent meetings of the empowered groups that given the scenario, a lockdown may be a necessary step in Kerala, ET has learnt. On Wednesday, Kerala had announced a complete lockdown on July 17 and 18 but it may need to be extended further to have any effect. The reason for this is that all the 14 districts in the state were showing a positivity rate of over 10% and a ‘mixture of variants’ were pushing it up. While maximum samples in Kerala show the Delta variant, the Alpha, Beta and Gamma are also marking their presence simultaneously. A June 24 assessment had also shown up this ‘mix’ of variants.Of the 2,390 Variants of Concern (VoC) sequenced in Kerala by June 24, 1,482 were of the Delta variant; 642 were the Alpha variant; 197 were of Kappa and B.1.617.3 variants; and 65 samples showed the Beta variant. The Alpha and Kappa proportion found in Kerala sequences is one of the highest in the country. The Gamma variant with only sample testing for it, also marks its presence.“It is not Delta alone, in Kerala. There are a large number of variants still working there and hence there is no clear picture yet of the key driver of the cases. There are general behavioural issues and lack of implementation of governmental measures that also contribute,” an Insacog member told ET on condition of anonymity. This is unlike the scenario seen in other major states. Maharashtra’s current uptick is being linked to Delta’s reach to the state’s rural belt. Experts said the high positivity in the Northeast is also linked to Delta. Since the Delta wave set in a little later in the northeastern states, it is showing higher positivity. The laxity of people towards Covid-appropriate behaviour, besides poor implementation of governmental measures, is adding to this. The Kerala scenario is being closely watched not just for known variants but also new variants and emerging mutations.
