India seeks to probe JeM’s Pulwama link | Economic Times

NEW DELHI: Two years after the Pulwama attack, India plans to seek a probe into the bank accounts, phone records and video messages exchanged between Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) top leadership in Pakistan with the attackers.A letter rogatory (LR) being drafted by the National Investigation Agency mentions bank transfer from Pakistan’s Meezan Bank and Allied Bank, officials added.According to the NIA, the accounts were used by Jaish commanders Rouf Asgar and Ammar Alvi, the brother and cousin of JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar, for transferring funds which were suspected to have been used for the attack. Pakistan authorities in the past have not replied to India’s LRs in connection with the 2016 Pathankot attacks and the 26/11 Mumbai attack involving David Coleman Headley. An NIA spokesperson did not respond to queries. An LR is a formal communication sent by a court to a foreign court requesting the collection of evidence testimony of a witness in its jurisdiction. For the Pulwama case, the LR being drafted to be sent to Pakistan will seek to identify the original subscriber of the mobile numbers and the social media accounts which were used by a Pak national, Mohd Umar Farooq. Son of the IC-814 hijacking accused Ibrahim Athar, Farooq was killed in an encounter with the security forces in March 2019. According to the NIA, he was the main conspirator in the Pulwama attack.
